Tax residency

Tax residency in Cyprus comes first

Non-dom exists only for Cyprus tax residents. You qualify either on the day count in the rule below or on the 60-day rule with its 60 days minimum.

Tax residency

Individuals: more than 183 days in Cyprus in the calendar year, or the 60-day rule. Companies: managed and controlled in Cyprus, or (from 1 Jan 2026) incorporated or re-domiciled in Cyprus unless a tax treaty provides otherwise.

Checked on Tax Department, Ministry of Finance of Cyprus

What does the 60-day rule ask for?

60 days in Cyprus in the calendar year, and no more than 183 days in any other single state. On top of the days, you need a job, an office or a business in Cyprus at some point in the year, and a home there, owned or rented. From 1 January 2026 you no longer have to prove you are not resident anywhere else.

Checked on Tax Department, Ministry of Finance of Cyprus

In what order do the filings go?

Tax number first, then the residence test, then the non-dom application. We run all three inside our 10–20 working days; the Tax Department sets its own pace after filing, and our reference publishes no processing time for it.

Does a Cyprus company make me resident?

No. Owning or directing a Cyprus company does not count a single day for you. It can help with one condition of the 60-day rule, a business or office held in Cyprus, but the 60 days and the home are still yours to show.

Income Tax (Amending) Law N. 244(I)/2025 - Tax Department presentation

What if my old country still treats me as resident?

A double tax treaty decides. The Ministry of Finance lists 72 treaties; the tie-breaker in the one with your other country settles where you are resident for treaty purposes.

What non-dom changes and what it leaves alone

The same reform: companies incorporated in Cyprus are tax resident by incorporation (in addition to the management-and-control test) unless a tax treaty says otherwise; tax losses can be carried forward 7 years instead of 5; crypto-asset gains of individuals are taxed at a flat 8%; the deemed dividend distribution rule is abolished for profits of 2026 onwards (profits up to 2025 stay in the old regime); stamp duty is abolished. Dividends received by a Cyprus company are generally exempt from corporate tax. Pillar Two domestic minimum top-up tax applies to in-scope groups from 31 Dec 2024. From 2026 the status can be extended for up to two 5-year periods by paying a lump-sum SDC of EUR 250,000 per period (EUR 50,000 a year), on application to the Tax Commissioner by 30 June of the first year of each period; the choice is irrevocable and the amount is non-refundable.

Fits

Residents born outside Cyprus who live on dividends or interest. Example: a founder who moves and takes profit from their own company pays 0% defence contribution on those dividends instead of 5%.

Who this is not for

Anyone with a Cyprus domicile of origin, residents past 17 years years, and people whose income is mostly salary: salary is taxed up to 35% either way. Extending the status at €250,000 a period pays off only on dividends above €5,000,000 per period (€250,000 ÷ 5%).

FAQ

Cyprus non-dom: short answers

How do I get non-dom status in Cyprus?

Become Cyprus tax resident, register for a tax number and file a non-dom application with the Tax Department. Our package covers all three steps for one person from €500. Proof of residence itself, the tax residency certificate, is a separate application to the same department.

Can I be non-dom in Cyprus on 60 days?

Yes, if all conditions of the 60-day rule hold: 60 days in Cyprus, no more than 183 days in any other single state, a Cyprus job, office or business, and a Cyprus home.

Checked on

How long does Cyprus non-dom status last?

Until you have been resident for 17 years years within the look-back period, when you become deemed domiciled. From 1 January 2026 it can be extended by 2 periods at €250,000 each, €500,000 in total.

Checked on

Does non-dom mean no tax in Cyprus?

No. It removes only the defence contribution on dividends and interest, and since 1 January 2026 there is 0% contribution on rent for anyone. Income tax still reaches 35%, and crypto gains are taxed at 8%.
