Note

How to calculate it without a calculator

Take chargeable income for the year. The first €22,000/year is taxed at 0%; then 20% from €22,000 to €32,000, 25% from €32,000 to €42,000, 30% from €42,000 to €72,000; only the euros above €72,000/year pay 35%. Add up the slices.

Full explanation

Worked example at €72,000, the edge of the top band: nothing on the first €22,000/year, then 20% of €10,000 (€2,000), 25% of €10,000 (€2,500), 30% of €30,000 (€9,000). Total €13,500, an effective rate of 18.75%, with no euro reaching 35%. The example leaves out social insurance, deductions and any exemption; the exemptions are worked through under special regimes below.

Tax residency

Starting a Cyprus job: residency, documents, timing

Cyprus taxes residents on worldwide income, and residence is tested per calendar year: over 183 days, or at least 60 days under the 60-day rule. A Cyprus employment contract meets one of the 60-day conditions on its own.

Tax residency

Individuals: more than 183 days in Cyprus in the calendar year, or the 60-day rule. Companies: managed and controlled in Cyprus, or (from 1 Jan 2026) incorporated or re-domiciled in Cyprus unless a tax treaty provides otherwise.

Checked on Tax Department, Ministry of Finance of Cyprus

I start work mid-year. Am I resident for that year?

Only if the days add up. Under the 60-day rule you need at least 60 days in Cyprus, no more than 183 days in any other single state, the Cyprus job, and a home in Cyprus you own or rent, all in the same calendar year. A job that starts in November rarely leaves room for 60 days in that calendar year.

Checklist: what to have ready before we file

Passport; the signed contract or offer letter from the Cyprus employer; a lease or title deed for your home in Cyprus; a record of travel days for the year (boarding passes, entry and exit stamps); and, for the 50% exemption, proof that you were not Cyprus resident in the 15 years before the job, such as tax residency certificates from your previous country.

Checked on PwC Worldwide Tax Summariessecondary source

What takes time, and what cannot be sped up?

Our part takes 10–20 working days from a complete document set: tax number registration, the residence test review and the non-dom application. The Tax Department’s own processing time is not published in our reference. The day count itself cannot be shortened: the 60 days or 183 days are days actually spent in Cyprus in that year.

Will my old country tax the same salary?

Where a treaty applies, one country gives way. The Ministry of Finance lists 72 double tax treaties, 69 of them with an entry-into-force date. Which one covers you, and from which day, depends on your previous country.

Exemptions and flat rates for individuals

A new resident paid over €55,000 can exempt 50% of the salary. At €72,000 that cuts the bill from €13,500 to €3,000; the 20% exemption would give €10,935 and the 25% one €8,100. Only one of them applies at a time.

IndividualsNon-domiciled (non-dom) statusDefence contribution on dividends0%

Changed

Cyprus tax residents who are not Cyprus-domiciled pay no Special Defence Contribution (SDC) on dividends, interest and (until 2025) rent, worldwide. Someone without a Cyprus domicile of origin becomes deemed domiciled after being tax resident for at least 17 of the last 20 years. From 2026 the status can be extended for up to two 5-year periods by paying a lump-sum SDC of EUR 250,000 per period (EUR 50,000 a year), on application to the Tax Commissioner by 30 June of the first year of each period; the choice is irrevocable and the amount is non-refundable.

Who this is not for

People born with a Cyprus domicile, and long-term residents already deemed domiciled. It changes nothing on salary: employment income still goes through the bands.

Which law sets income tax in Cyprus, and what changed in 2026?

The Income Tax Law, as amended by Income Tax (Amending) Law N. 244(I)/2025, in force from 1 January 2026.
